Go Beyond Barrington to Hold Jammin' for Joplin Concert

The group is raising money to rebuild a home in Joplin, Missouri.

A group of students is making a difference in the lives of others.

The club called Go Beyond Barrington was started last year as a way for students to empower those in need outside of the Barrington area. After a tornado devastated the town of Joplin, Missouri, killing 157 people and destroying thousands of homes, the students to dedicate their efforts toward helping Joplin rebuild. They raised $18,000 that went to the engineering program at Joplin High School.

“We went down there and saw the destruction first hand and it inspired us to make a change on a personal level by actually helping a family there,” said Becca Mooney, a Barrington High School Junior and Board Member with Go Beyond Barrington.

This year, the group’s goals are much higher. They are working to raise $50,000 to help rebuild one of the homes in the Joplin area that was destroyed by the tornado. They’ve partnered with the Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity to make this a reality.

“We haven’t raised the money yet so we aren’t sure which family will get the home but we know it will be very well received.” Mooney said.

The group has been holding a number of fundraising efforts this school year to raise money for Joplin. Their largest fundraising event will take place this Saturday, Sept. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The group has organized a concert called Jammin’ for Joplin at the Barrington High School auditorium.

White Shadow, The Road Not Taken, Skunk Funk, Sextet, Mr. Potts and Ashika Sachdev will all take the stage during the concert. Tickets are $10 at the door and proceeds will go toward the Joplin relief efforts.

Donations are being accepted online at www.gobeyondbarrington.org
