In light of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. where 27 people were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, District 220 is beefing up security.
With holiday parties happening in the local elementary schools, school administration is making sure all guests entering the buildings are verified as welcomed visitors.
"Holiday parties are a tradition elementary-age children, their parents and teachers enjoy. While the school district does not want to take away the excitement of the season, increasingly strict security procedures require every school to welcome guests more cautiously," an email from District 220 read.
The district said there are no immediate safety concerns, however the Mayan prediction of the end of the world on Dec. 21 has caused what the district calls unfounded fears and supposed threats.
"Such sensational tales - although unbelievable and unsubstantiated - must be taken seriously when reported. Students who knowingly disrupt the school environment by starting these falsehoods are subject to disciplinary consequences," the email read.
