Purple Heels and Purple Dresses Support RFL Barrington

BHS students make paper dresses for display during Relay for Life Barrington events.

Carla Darlington, Barrington High School fashion merchandising instructor, inspired her top-level students to create nine beautiful and unique Relay for Life (RFL) paper dresses for display in the Barrington area over the next three months.

The 7th hour BHS class was treated to purple flower cupcakes (Barrington's 2011 RFL holds the world record) and purple high heel cookies to "thank" them and presented with a RFL Appreciation Award from the American Cancer Society.

These talented students reached outside of their classroom and into their community by creating wonderful dresses to promote their passion for the RFL and make a fashion statement for the "Purple Heals" campaign. Many dresses are already at locations such as Wickstrom Auto Group, The Ice House Mall, Angelina's, SweetPea Cakes, The Garland's, Norton's USA, Millrose, and B.Chones

The RFL "Follow us to a world with more Birthday" dresses will be traveling around the  Barrington area to promote the upcoming RFL "Purple Heals" events in Barrington.  Francie Cox will coordinate the dresses with purple high heels and other accessories.

The month long series of events will be kicking off on April 26 at Park Avenue Wine Bar at 4 p.m. to support merchants and restaurants in 60010 with shopping and dining experiences for all residents to enjoy.  This unique first annual event has been organized by Linda Hanaford, Co-Chair, Maura Shandley, Marketing Director,  Dr. Liz Kane, Special Events, and Joanne Dalessandro, RFL Chair.

Keep following the Purple Heels around Barrington as local businesses continue with many special offers during the month of May to support RFL in Barrington.

The Ice House Mall will feature a special "Purple Can Heal" event on May 10 to collect canned goods for the RFL luminaria on June 8.  This initiative is being organized by Kate Mitten, Colleen Mallon, & Debby Argianas;  where the RFL will then donate the canned goods on June 9 to local Barrington and Cuba Township Food Pantries, as the ACS pays it forward to another charity in town.

The Ice House Mall merchants will be serving up a slice of cake to celebrate more birthdays when patrons drop off canned goods on May 10, as well as shopping incentives and contributions to the RFL all month long.  Barrington's Biggest Birthday Bash will also feature a cake contest with celebrity judges organized by Eleanor Sweet McDonnell, RFL co-chair.

On May 24, from 5 to 8 p.m., Francesca's will host a Fashion Fling with complimentary appetizers and "purple heals"shopping.

Get ready to kick off your heels, trade in your pumps for your walking shoes; and meet back at the BHS track for the RFL of Barrington on June 8 at 6 p.m. Informal modeling will be provided by Leslie Roberts of Carlisle.

The first team captain meeting is Monday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at BHS.  Please come out to see the new Wickstrom Sponsored purple RFL Jeep out front.  Make a team, become a Sponsor, or a join the innovative committee at www.relayforlife.org/barringtonil.
