VIDEO: Nine-Year-Olds Take on Robot Building Project

The group from Hough Street School's Extended Self-Contained Program assembled a series of robots this summer.

It’s not what you’d expect a group of nine-year-olds to do for fun this summer, but four incredibly intelligent 4th graders used their free time building robots.

“My favorite part is seeing what it’s supposed to do, and how we can program it,” student participant Abraham said.

Under the guidance and supervision of Kathy Moseler, also known as the Robot Lady, the kids worked once a week to assemble a series of robots sold by Moseler’s company, Paradise Robotics. Moseler’s company has recently started selling educational robotic kits, so she decided to get her son and his friends involved in learning about these new products.

“Rather than building by myself which would be kind of boring, since my son was interested and I knew some of his friends would be interested, I asked some of the parents if their kids would like to participate,” Moseler said.

These aren’t your average 4th graders. All of the students who built robots this summer are part of Hough Street School’s Extended Self-Contained program, which caters to the needs of most intelligent elementary school kids.

Although the kids had tons of fun building the robots, they also developed a variety of skills in the process.

“We technically learned a lot about circuiting and a real lot about just technically what you can do with the circuits and kind of being creative and getting the robots to do what you want, which is pretty fun,” student participant Meg said.

Moseler hopes schools across the country will see the value in her educational robots. and the kids just hope they’ll be able to do more of these types of projects very soon.

“It was awesome!” participant Kyle said.
