Barrington High School Fall Sports in Full Swing

Here's a condensed look at the fall sports that are in progress at Barrington High School.

Barrington High School sports are in full swing for the fall season and can offer residents entertainment at a bargain price.

"All of our fall sports are deserving of support," Athletic Director Mike Obsuszt said. "High school athletics are, by far, the best bargain in town."

Here is a rundown of all the action:

Girls Golf

Girls golf is back and the Fillies have been very consistent in their approach.  After finishing fifth of 18 teams to open the season at the Barrington Invitational, the Fillies finished third of 18 teams at the Lake County Invite and second at the U-High tournament down in Bloomington.

The Fillies have recorded solid victories in match plays against Wheeling, Conant and Schaumburg.

Who to watch: Kelly Muskat is a consistent 80's shooter and already set a school record for her 1-over-72 against Elk Grove and had an eagle at the Barrington Invitational.

Boys Golf

Boys golf is back, too.  The Broncos started the season with an impressive first-place victory of 10 teams and tournament record of 292 at the Prairie Ridge tournament.

The team didn't stop there.  They also won the Woodstock Golf Invitational in dramatic fashion by beating Highland Park in a fifth-score tie break.  But most impressive was the 37 teams that the Broncos beat to take top honors at the Mattoon Boy's Golf invitational.

Who to watch: Mike Stathakis or Nick Schiavi, who both tied for second at the Mattoon invitational and both have recorded multiple victories in their individual matches.

Girls Volleyball

Fillies Volleyball was off to a rough start by losing their first two matches but they were able to right the ship, if only temporarily, with back-to-back home victories against Elk Grove and then Palatine.

After losses to Schaumburg and East St. Charles, the Fillies, with Madison Lang sitting out with a pinched nerve, lost all five matches at the Prairie Ridge Invitational.  The Fillies have got back to their winning ways with consecutive victories against Hoffman Estates and Fremd.

Who to watch: Madison Lang, because at 6-foot, 2 inches, she is a dominating presence and has been recruited to play for Florida Atlantic next year.

Football

Broncos Football is back and trying hard to forget last year's 3-6 record, and a 4-0 to start the season is a good way to do that.  Broncos have used a big offensive line to allow for a balanced attack.

Newcomer Matt LeMire has found a nice home behind center Pat Bolger and guards Jimmy Kristof and Aaron Castagna, which has allowed him to move the ball effectively down field.  The Broncos also have a stingy defense that has caused many problems for opposing quarterbacks and this comes after Coach Sanchez made the switch from defense to offensive coordinator.

Who to watch:  Chase Murdock, who is a returning junior running back who rushed for 1054 yards and scored six touchdowns. He had two touchdowns against Libertyville and had back-to-back 100-yard games against Elk Grove and Hersey.

Boys Cross Country

Boys cross country is poised to make a run at the class-3 state championship with nine of 10 runners returning this year and had a first-place finish at the Wauconda Invite with 104 points.

Who to watch: Eric Peterson, who returns for his senior year after finishing 57th last year at state.

Girls Cross Country

With eight of 10 girls returning for cross country this season, the team has almost as many returning to varsity as the Boys team does.  With strong efforts from their runners, the Girls Cross Country team earned their first major title of 28 teams this season at the Peoria Woodruff Invitational.

Who to watch: Rebecca Batliner, who after finishing in 40th place at state last year many are wondering if her stress fracture will be an issue this season.  She finished 12th at the Peoria Woodruff Invitational.

Boys Soccer

After a disappointing season last year (7-15-2), coach Scott Steib hopes to regain that state championship form of 2007, but if this is to happen the Broncos will need more offense.  The Broncos had a rough start to the season and didn't record their first victory until their match against Hoffman Estates.

The Broncos have only scored more than one goal in a game twice this year and if this trend continues, it will make it tough for Barrington to record more victories.

Also making it difficult is the Bronco's defense.  After giving up a staggering seven goals in their first two matches, it seems they have recovered and have been holding teams.

Who to watch: Will Cotopolis, the Broncos' goalkeeper who had been out for Barrington's first three matches with a broken hand but has since returned and allowed only a goal in the Broncos first victory.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis is back,  and the girls team is hoping to be contenders for state titles, even though only a few members from last years title run are returning.  Losing nine players from a team would mean rebuilding for most programs, but Barrington is leaning on their leader and expects much from senior Kristy Dodge and sophomore Zoe Kasuriak, both of whom have state playoff experience.

Who to watch: Kristy Dodge, who is returning for her senior year after finishing sixth in state last year and fourth as a sophomore and has hopes for a state title.

Girls Swimming

The girls swimming and diving teams are back and diving right into the action.  What seems to be a common theme at Barrington, losing your star and locker room leader to graduation, and the swimming team was no different.

After Emily Fogle left for Purdue with Barrington's first-ever swimming state championship, there is a huge hole that will need to be filled. But with more than 80 students on the team, hopefully someone will step up.

Who to watch: Jacqueline Holdsberg, who was a state qualifier from last year, placing 13th in the 100-yard backstroke
