Barrington's Girls' Basketball Loses First Conference Game

A solid Fremd effort that saw three players score in double figures hands the Fillies their first conference loss 54-42 on "Think Pink" night.

Friday was "Think Pink" night at Barrington High School as the school honored the Susan G. Koman fund with a double dose of Fremd and Barrington basketball.

First, the boys' basketball took the floor., but the Broncos were unable to hold their halftime lead and lost to the Vikings 53-41.

Moments later, the Fremd girls' finished off the sweep of Barrington with a 54-42 victory ending an exciting night of basketball that was for a great cause.  It was such an exciting night that 1980 Barrington alumnus, and Congressman-elect, Joe Walsh was in attendance.

The reigning MSL champion Fremd Vikings (5-1, 1-0) kicked of conference play against their rival the Barrington Fillies (4-3, 0-1), Friday, Dec. 3.  The Fillies were hoping to build on their victory over Buffalo Grove on Tuesday and would need to come out strong against Fremd if they wanted to get conference play started on the right track.

The game didn't start out as planned for the Fillies as stifling, quick defense set the tone early disrupting the offensive rhythm of Barrington.  The Fillies were forced into taking bad shots with a Fremd players' hand in the shooter's face while the Vikings hustle also created turnovers that helped Fremd get out to a 10-2 run.  That was a lead they would never regain.

"We didn't show-up in any way, shape or form tonight and this is the second game now where we have lost because of a slow start," Barrington's coach Babbi Barrerio said following the game.  "For a sophomore laden group that's acceptable, but for a senior laden group we need to do a better job."

Productive ball movement and good spacing allowed for five different Fremd players to score in the quarter that saw the Vikings jump out to a 16-8 lead with just seconds remaining in the frame.  Fremd's sophomore guard Ashley McConnell kicked off the scoring and ended the night with 11 points.

Fremd would have ended the first quarter with a larger lead but thanks to senior guard Abby Kirchoff buzzer beater, the Vikings only had a 16-10 lead.  Kirchoff lead Barrington with 13 points.

The second frame began with the Fillies cutting into the Viking lead initially but the back and forth battle for points began once Fremd had a 10 point lead.  Senior forward Brooke Chandor's three near the end of the first half helped get the lead below before halftime.  The Fillies entered the locker room down 31-22.

Jessie Wiedemann had five points in the second quarter as she helped Fremd add to their lead.  Wiedemann ended the night with 14 points, and was one of three Fremd players that ended the game in double figures.

"No," Fremd's coach Dave Yates said when asked if he was surprised by the number of girls' in double figures.  "We have a lot of kids who can score.  Barrington threw different zones and I think the girls handled it well by finding the open player."

Both teams continued their fight for momentum with neither team willing to budge as defense was the main factor in a third quarter that saw each team only score six points.  Barrington's team defense was menacing and caused havoc for Fremd's momentum.  The hustle and quickness displayed by the Fillies seemed to provide offensive opportunities but unfortunately Barrington was unable to capitalize.

"We just couldn't convert and we really struggled shooting the ball," Coach Barreiro said of her team's poor shooting.  "We're capable of better basketball; we just have to get everyone on the same page on the same night."

Nicole Collins did score one of the few baskets counted during the quarter and ended the night with nine points.

The fourth quarter continued with the two teams exchanging baskets and Barrington cut the lead to fewer than 10 at 43-35.   But the Vikings again turned up the defensive pressure that saw them end the game on an 11-7 run sparked offensively by senior forward Jaimie Groot.  Groot scored a game high 15 points as she propelled Fremd to a 54-42 victory.

"We're a better team than this and I'm confident in that.  I believe in these kids," Barrerio said.  "It's early in the season and too early to panic, but we need to do a much better job overall."

Barrington's next game will be against Huntley on Tuesday, Dec. 7.  The tip-off for the home game is at 7 p.m.
