Broncos' Soccer Has Abrupt Finish to Tournament

Mother Nature plays a part in ending Barrington's own tournament, and their chances for a comeback.

Was it the weather, the controversial overturn on an attempted penalty kick, his team’s play during their finale in the Barrington Classic, or a combination of all three that made Bronco’s coach Scott Steib so frustrated?

“I’m a little frustrated with a lot of things right now,” was the sole comment Steib made after the weather-shortened consolation match of the 23rd Barrington Classic Tournament.

During the 57 minutes of Saturday's match to decide third place in the Barrington Tournament, and with (1-3-1) losing 2-0 against St. Charles North, the safety alarm sounded to signify a weather danger that forced a delay due to potential lightning and the eventually early termination of the match.

The North Stars’ senior Alex Behm (27:14) was first to strike as he was able to find the back of the net, past Barrington’s goalie, Max Redpath. In three games of tournament action for the Broncos, Redpath allowed five goals. The Broncos finished hosting the tournament with a 1-2-1 record, and for the start of the short season, Redpath has a 1.5 goals against average.

Barrington would have its chance for the equalizer on a penalty kick later in the first half, after senior forward Reid Strain was taken down via a rough tackle in the Star’s box. But on the ensuing play, Bronco’s leading scorer, midfielder Craig Zahour’s kick was stopped by a diving Garrett Creasor to leave the score 1-0.

However, the back referee called Creasor for leaving his line giving the Broncos what the thought would be another chance to tie the game before halftime; unfortunately, the head referee overruled the call, much to the objection of Steib, who felt the original referee had a better angle. The two teams entered intermission with the Stars leading 1-0.

While the North Star’s offense looked to build on their 1-0 lead by testing Redpath within seconds of the half opening, Creasor and the St. Charles defense would continue their stingy play against the Broncos throughout the game. The North Stars only allowed two goals in the tournament (2-0 loss to Rockford Boylan, 2010 3A state champs) while keeping a clean sheet against Marmion Academy and Warren.

The North Stars would add another score just minutes prior to game stoppage. At the 53-minute mark, senior Mike Winhoffer managed to kick one to the far post, past the outstretched hands of Redpath for the 2-0 lead.

Moments later the game would be delayed and eventually the rest would be canceled, giving St. Charles the 2-0 victory and the third-place finish in the Barrington Classic. It was a disappointing end to a tournament that had seen Barrington battle Wheaton Warrenville to a tie before losing their next two matches. Barrington lost to New Trier 1-2 on Thursday.

The weather also delayed the championship match between New Trier and Rockford Boylan, which was rescheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5.

Barrington won’t have much time to get over the disappointing ending to its tournament before entering another one. After the Broncos face Schaumburg at home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, Barrington travels to Indiana to participate in the Great Midwest Classic Tournament. The weekend-long tournament has Barrington playing teams from throughout the region — Montana, Iowa, Indiana, etc.
