Fillies Soccer Loses on Late Goal

Geneva beats Barrington in Mairin Wallner Tournament 1-0.

Momentum seemed to be with the Barrington Fillies soccer team during the second half of the April 28 match against the Geneva Vikings. However, a late goal gave the Lady Vikings the win.

“We created a lot of chances and got good style points,” Fillies coach Ryan Stengren said of the loss.  “I was happy with the way we played. I just didn’t like the result.”

The lone, and winning goal, was scored by Geneva’s Catherine Allon, at the 8:20  mark of the second half.  The shot seemed to stun the home fans, but more importantly, goalie Kelly Pedersen who was only tested on a couple of solid attempts throughout the match.

“We work on crosses all the time in practice,” Allon said of her goal.  “I just knew they ball was going to be there.”

“Barrington played so well,” Allon went on to say. “This is the farthest our team has gone in this tournament (in six years) and also the first time we’ve ever beaten Barrington.”

After the scoreless first half, Barrington took control of the ball starting the second.  The Fillies physical play on defense helped keep the ball on the Vikings side of the field and generate more offense.  Unfortunately for Barrington, every time they found themselves in the box they were unable to find the back of the net.

“That first goal is huge; we had the momentum and plenty of opportunities,” Stengren said.  “That has been our issue and it hasn’t been from a lack of chances lately, it is about being composed in the box and finishing.”

Barrington had numerous chances, from Morgan Starchura setting up Emily Hyde near the right sidelines who managed to elude her defender.  Moments later Hyde found Molly Pfeiffer but her shot sailed a bit.

Barrington had set pieces that were also unsuccessful from the corner too.  Freshman Mia Calamari’s and Hyde’s attempts were unable to find teammates situated in the box and usually resulted in Geneva’s back line poking the ball out.

Barrington (8-5-1), who lost in disappointing fashion in the Championship of the Mairin Wallner Tournament last year on penalty kicks, set up their match with Geneva with victories over Evanston and St. Viator.  With the 1-0 victory, Geneva (8-3-4) moves on to play No. 1 Neuqua Valley at Naperville Central in the semi-finals.
