Red Versus White in Fillies Lacrosse

Barrington's lacrosse team set to begin 2011 season.

The unofficial start to Barrington's lacrosse season pits Fillies against Fillies.

With the start of the 2011 Barrington lacrosse season set for April 1 at 6:45 p.m. against Schaumburg , the Fillies played a split squad scrimmage game in preparation for their upcoming season.

“This scrimmage was a good opportunity to work some of the kinks out before the season starts,” Fillies co-varsity coach Jenna Zilka said.

Barrington finished as the 2010 MSL conference champions but lost in the elite eight to Montini 12-8. Fillies' coaches Suzanne Rich and Jenna Zilka are hoping to build on their 15-7 record through team work and senior leadership.

“The chemistry I have seen from this team is amazing,” Rich said. “These girls have worked well together; no one is selfish and they are playing as a team.”

Helping with the leadership on the field are three skilled athletic seniors Jacqueline Holdsberg, Caitlin Donohue and MacKenzie McPike.

“McPike had a phenomenal year (in 2010),” Rich said of the academic all-American and coaches pick as captain.

Last year McPike led the team in draw controls (40) and was ranked second in state with 99 ground ball controls as a junior.

“All three captains have natural leadership qualities,” Rick said. “They have all played on varsity for a number of years now and will bring that experience.”

“(Holdsberg, McPike, and Donohue) are not just about offense, defense or playing the midfield,” Zilka went on to say about the trio. “They can play all over the field.”

In the net for the Fillies will be an underclassman, Jenna Feldman (sophomore), who has made the leap from last year's frosh/soph team straight to the varsity team. But the coaching tandem of Rich and Zilka are confident that she will hold her own, especially with her hard work and the veteran defense to lend support.

“She's worked a lot in the off-season and has worked with a goalie from Northwestern,” Zilka said of Feldman. “She has worked independently to really step up her game.”

Rich and Zilka feel that the Fillies are poised for a strong year and know the team is eager for their first match on Friday, April 1. The Fillies lacrosse team is hoping that their is no April Fools when they play a conference foe in the home opener and that the season has them advance to the State finals.
