Several Sports Teams End Season With Medals

The final installment, of the multipart series, that looks back on how the 2011 spring season finished for the Broncos and Fillies.

Boys’ Track

The Bronco’s 3200 meter relay team was off and running to start the season, and they didn’t stop until they reached the podium to collect their silver medal at the IHSA state meet held at Eastern Illinois University.

Double state qualifier junior Eric Peterson (also ran the 1600 meter run but failed to advance to the finals) and senior Eric Schneider (ran the 4 x 400 relay with teammates senior Terrence Thomas, Tim Jaderholm and Dale Jno-Baptiste that also failed to qualify for the finals 3:20.47) took home the silver medal with seniors Karl Eiring and Pat Managan in the 4 x 800 with a record time for Barrington (7:44.87).  The relay team had sliced off more than four seconds from their preliminary run but couldn’t out race the runners from Minooka that took home the gold with a time of 7:43.42.

Barrington had a bevy of players qualify for state, but only the 3200 relay team was participating in the finals despite strong individual performances by both Peterson and A.J. Scarbrough (triple jump).  Both Broncos missed the cutoff for qualifying for their events by just one spot in the preliminaries.

Girls’ Soccer

To describe the Fillies’ soccer season this year, simply steal a quote from baseball great Yogi Berra who said, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

The Fillies once again put together a solid season (17-7-1, 7-3-1) but lost in what is becoming a disappointing yet exciting trend, by being eliminated in the elite eight round of the IHSA class 3A super-sectional.

The Fillies ended their season at home for the third straight year in the super-sectional and the loss to Fremd (2-1) was the second time in that span that the heated divisional foe Lady Vikes (18-4-2) were the culprit.  Sophomore Molly Pfeiffer scored her 5th goal of the postseason in the game and it was her team leading 14th goal of the season.  Pfeiffer also had six assists.

There was plenty of underclassman alongside Pfeiffer helping to lead the charge for the Fillies including Elli Ackerman who chipped in seven goals.  Another freshman Mia Calamari led the Fillies in assists for the year (10), one more than senior teammate Emily Hyde.  Hyde, playing for Miami of Ohio next year, also scored 11 goals on the season, despite not playing in the team’s first few matches due to injury.

On the defensive side, senior goal tender Kelly Pedersen was the anchor for a solid defense that had averaged .88 goals allowed per contest.  Pedersen had 14 shutouts in 25 matches in the net, with three straight shutouts during the playoffs accounting for nearly three hundred minutes of shutout ball.  Pedersen started the shutout streak after the first half against Lake Zurich and it continued with a 3-0 victory versus Jacobs in the regional championship.  The minutes kept creeping up with their 1-0 win over number sixth ranked in the state Huntley and then again in their 1-0 win over Crystal Lake South.

Boys’ Gymnastics

It was a tough, physically demanding gymnastics season for the young Broncos team and it culminated at the Mundelein Sectional with only one gymnast able to sneak through to the IHSA state meet.  Barrington’s senior Matt Bosworth received an at-large qualifying bid in the vault with his 8.850 score.  However, Bosworth was unable to advance to the finals of the state meet as he finished with a score of 8.4 during the preliminaries but needed better than a 9.350 for the final qualifying spot for Saturday’s action.

The Lincoln-Way East Coop team, hosting the state meet, won the two day event with 163 team points, edging out Wheaton-Warrenville South Coop (161.250).  MSL rival Palatine High School would finish in fifth (149.550) at the meet.

Lincoln-Way finished with gold medals in four of the seven gymnastic events with junior Ajani Cargle finishing in the top spot in the all-around, floor exercise, and the horizontal bars.  Cargle also placed second in the still rings, third in the vault and tenth in the pommel horse.
