Broncos Football Remains Undefeated

Barrington beats Wheeling 24-7, gets one game closer to playoffs.

The Barrington Broncos might have been playing host to the Wheeling Wildcats on Sept. 16, but they weren't very welcoming.

Despite a shortened week due to the Thursday game, the Broncos and their defense were well prepared and held off the Wildcats' efforts, 24-7. The Broncos are now 4-0 and need just one more victory to qualify for the playoffs.

With a Wheeling team that averages 340 yards per game and a Broncos Defense that only allows 336 yards per game, this Mid-Suburban crossover game would need to be decided by turnovers and field position, and it was.

With the score tied late in the first half, Barrington caught their first real break when Wheeling's punt returner was unable to handle the ball cleanly, allowing Barrington to recover the fumble on Wheeling's 40 yard line.  Barrington quickly capitalized on both the field position and turnover with Chase Murdoch punching in a two yard run for one of his three touchdowns on the evening.

As if ending the half with a touchdown wasn't exciting enough, Murdock, who told his team at half time, "This game isn't over!" started the second half with a 22 yard touchdown run that gave the Broncos a comfortable lead of 21-7.  Murdock ended the night with 133 yards rushing on 23 attempts with three scores while Matt LeMire had some difficulties with the pass attack but still finished with a respectable 7 of 15 for 73 yards.  LeMire did have an interception but on a night with the defense stepping up it caused no problems.

The Broncos defense played another magnificent game allowing only 188 total yards of offense and a measly 60 yards rushing. Wheeling's Eddie Scanlon rushed for 37 yards on 8 attempts, and had their lone touchdown while Wheeling's quarterback managed 11 completions for 128 yards.  The quickness and size of Barrington's defensive pressure forced another interception at the hands of Ben LeCompte, LeCompte's fourth interception in less than a week.  Listed as the kicker too, LeCompte also kicked the field goal to record the points on his interception.   By recovering a fumble too LeCompte put an exclamation point on a stellar personal defensive effort.

Up next for the Broncos

Barrington (4-0) will travel to conference rival Conant (2-2) for the September 24th game (kickoff 7:30).  The Broncos are hoping that their solid and fast defense can contain the Cougars and their offensive weapons averaging 272 yards/game.  Matt LeMire should be able to get back on track as the Cougar defense allows more than 330 yards of offense.

What to watch for: Another 100 yards of rushing from Murdock, can LeCompte find away for another interception making it three straight weeks?
