Tough Test of Games Starts Out Rough for Fillies’ Softball

Elk Grove hits its way to slaughter and one hits Barrington too.

There are certain stretches of the season where teams will be tested, and for Barrington softball one of those times is now.

“We are playing some of the best teams in the state right now,” Barrington’s Coach Perry Peterson said of the upcoming games.  “Of the state’s top eight teams we play four of them in a short period of time.”

And unfortunately for the Fillies (15-5, 4-2) they got off on the wrong foot with their upcoming set of games with a 13-0 loss to Elk Grove (13-1, 6-0), who finished third in state last year (4A).

Senior pitcher Kiley Dolezal picked up the loss but it was Elk Grove’s hitting and shaky Barrington pitching and defense (three errors) that helped start Barrington’s pitching carousel during the game on April 28.  The lone Barrington pitching high light was Loren Krysko who retired the last five batters, but after the game was out of hand.

“Pitching was our issue today and that is what we are trying to improve upon,” Peterson said.  “Compliments to Elk Grove today, they were much better than we were and deserving of the win.”

The Grenadiers pounded out 13 hits and all nine starters recorded a hit in the five inning shortened game.  However, Barrington’s offense was unable to get anything going against junior Dani Goranson who allowed only two base runners.

The little spurt of Barrington offense started in the fourth with a one out walk to catcher Kristin Kuhn.  She was followed by the only Barrington hit, an infield single to Loren Krysko, but the late rally was stopped moments later by Elk Grove’s defense (0 errors).

“Chalk it up to poor performance,” Peterson said of the conference crossover game.  “We move on to the next one.”

After the loss, Barrington heads to downstate Washington, Illinois for a weekend tournament and the games won’t get any easier.  First the Fillies will face Trinity (Barrington lost to earlier in the year) ranked number two in the 4A Illinois coaches association polls, followed by Stanford-Olympia number2 in the 2A polls, and finish the stretch against Metamora number 2 in 3A polls.

“I think we will find out what our team is made of,” Peterson said of the upcoming road trip.
