The Spark

What will it take to get you healthy?

August 25, 2012

Yesterday was a great day for multiple reasons.  One of my dearest patients, a woman who I have taken care of since her early childhood, came in for a minor illness.  She looked great and informed me that her entire family was losing weight and getting healthy.  I was hoping she was going to attribute her family’s
new found health to reading my book, but unfortunately she didn’t.

Instead, she informed me that one of her family members had found “My Fitness Pal” and fell in love with the program.  His love affair with the program led to a significant weight loss and paved the way for the rest of his family’s success.  After years ofinstructing my patient to lose weight and get healthy, something finally clicked!

What is the magic spark that ignites the fire in a patient’s soul that leads him to success? What made Mr.Wow start exercising, eat appropriately, and win a Triathlon?   What made the patient noted above fall in love with My Fitness Pal?  What will it take to get you invested enough in your health to get Wellthy?

I propose that the legendary Fountain of Youth exists inside all of us.  Finding the
spark that leads to getting healthy is the key. There are multiple success stories posted on this blog.  They represent a small proportion of my successful patients.  Every day, another patient thanks me for changing his life. Today I was shopping in Costco.  A clerk stopped me, asking “Aren’t you Doctor Segal?  I read your book and have lost 20 pounds.  I just wanted to thank you.”

However long it takes, whatever you have to do, keep looking for something to motivate you to get healthy.  Ask your doc for suggestions.  Ask your friends for suggestions and help.  Read books on nutrition.  Explore computer applications.  Compete with yourself to be a better you.

As for me, I have to go for a walk.  I have to take 2,000 more steps today to walk
further than I did yesterday.  I downloaded My Fitness Pal earlier today.
It’s a pretty slick program.  I can have 2 pieces of fruit for my evening snack!  Make getting healthy fun but don’t “diet!”  Chicken step your way to health by being a better you.
