THE TRIFECTA OF MEDICINE

The trifecta of medicine is a wonderful thing!

June 20, 2012

According to Wikipedia, “In horse racing terminology, a trifecta is a parimutuel bet in which the bettor must predict which horses will finish first, second, and third in exact order.”  In other words, winning a trifecta is big!  In medicine, the race is a long one, it’s called life and the finish line is reaching a state of good health and “Wellth.”  Today, I won the trifecta!

Today was a really good day!  Patient X was waiting for me in Room 2.

Me - “John, you look great!  What have you been up to?  What can I do for you?”

John – “I’m down 21 pounds!!  I’ve read your book and have been following your advice.  Diets and Other Unnatural Acts is easy to follow.  I’m exercising, eating better, and enjoying life.  I’m here to check on my blood pressure meds.”

Me- “Congrats, your weight loss and exercise has paid off.  Your blood pressure is the lowest it’s been in years.  Let’s cut back on your lisinopril and recheck your blood pressure again in 3-4 weeks.  Maybe we can get you off your meds altogether!”

There are days when, as a doc, you feel like you can’t win.  Today started off with a big win.  Then Patient Y came in for a follow up on his bronchitis.  Patient Y has been with me for 20 years and has never experienced success in controlling his weight or his lifestyle.  As Patient Y was leaving he stated:

“Doc Segal, you didn’t ask about my 8 pound weight loss.  I read your book and have taken its message to heart. It works!”

I thank Patient Y and could feel my head swelling as I walked back to my office.  Two successful and thankful patients in one day, today surely is turning out to be a great day.  Late in the day, Patient Z came in to see me.

Patient Z is always tired.  Patient Z has a host of reasons to be tired.  Today, patient “Z” had more energy and looked great.

Patient Z – “I feel great!  You were right on the money!  Between your book, my I Phone, my Lose It program and pedometer, I feel better than I have in years.  I’m down 16 pounds and well on my way to losing the 50 I want to take off!  I wanted to thank you personally.”

Trifecta!  Three success stories in one day and all three from reading Diets and Other Unnatural Acts.  As a doc, I couldn’t ask for more.  As a writer, it feels good.  It’s really hard to judge how good your own book is.  New authors have a great deal of difficulty breaking into the mainstream.  With the advent of internet publishing, I am one of very many new authors clamoring for the spot light.

I have been writing this blog since 2010 and have an average of 2,000 readers a day.  I hope the impact of my book and this blog is a good one.  They are both meant to spread the “Wellth” to as many souls as possible.  At times, it feels like I am falling far short of my goal.  On days like this, I know I am not!

Thank you X, Y, and Z for adding to my “Wellthy!”  Your success has added to my emotional and spiritual accounts.  So, spread the word, “Wellthy” works!
