Annual Rummage Sale to Benefit Local Charities

is gearing up for the annual Rummage Sale set to take place this weekend.

The sale will run Friday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at the church located at 98 Algonquin Rd.

The women of the church typically collect donations for the event for several months leading up to the big sale. Shoppers will uncover hidden treasures of all kinds, from children’s clothing, to purses to electronics to holiday items.

“The sale fills up an entire wing of the church and includes a tent full of furniture,” Linda Osikowicz said.

The annual event began more than 75 years ago when women would swap their unwanted items at church during the Depression. Not all of the unneeded items would find a home, so the women organized a rummage sale to help other families in need.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to a variety of charities:

Barrington United Methodist Church hopes to raise $16,000 at the sale and expects at least several hundred people to attend. Osikowicz recommends sale-goers get there early.

“It's extremely hard to get a parking place early in the day, and I've heard there have been traffic back-ups on Algonquin Road,” she said. 

There will be a half-price sale on Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. in selected departments. Saturday shoppers can take advantage of the Bargain Bag Sale, with all of the goodies you can fit into a $5 bag in selected departments.
