How to Stymie Invasive Weedy Vegetation

Citizens for Conservation will hold a program on the topic on April 28.

May is Invasive Species Month in Illinois. You can get a jump-start on learning about these plants by joining Citizens for Conservation's Community Education Committee on April 28 to see its slide program designed especially for local residents and targeting "Invasive Plant Species." It will help you recognize and control nasty aliens like buckthorn, garlic mustard, and Norway maple.

The program includes photographs of invasive plants proliferating in this area and taken by committee  members. These alien plants can be found in most residential yards. You will be amazed at how many you recognize and will learn how to control them at home. The program also makes recommendations for friendly and beautiful native species you can use to replace the invasive plants once you have removed them.

If you love the privacy your buckthorn affords, come see this program and discover native shrub species that provide just as much privacy as buckthorn but that also provide food and homes for birds and are much more beautiful than "the scourge of Barrington"!

The program begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, in the main meeting room at the Barrington Area Library. Please come at 9:30 for coffee and to view displays, pick up handouts, and talk with CFC volunteers and guests. CFC members attend at no charge; the cost for non-members is $10.
