Train Safety Video Aims to Help Save Lives

Barrington police work with Metra to educate community on train safety.

The village of Barrington is actively involved in a train safety education program, Operation Lifesaver Train Safety Awareness, said Barrington Assistant Police Chief Dave Dorn. The program is a comprehensive train safety program that educates children and adults of the dangers of Metra’s at-grade crossings and trespassing along the railroad’s right-of-way. "We do train safety programs and have for years been involved in Operation Lifesaver," Dorn said.  Dorn said police go to Barrington schools and talk about train safety with driver's education students as well as younger students.   "We have a lot of crossings so we try to do whatever we can to educate people about train safety," Dorn said.  The accident last Friday, in which 11-year-…

Barrington Police Sponsor Senior Car Safety Check

The event will take place Dec. 8 from 9-11:30 a.m.

  Winter driving can sometimes be challenging for seniors—so it’s important that their cars can handle the rigors of the road.  To ensure that those cars are safe for wintry weather, the Barrington Police Department will sponsor a senior car safety check on Saturday, December 8, from 9 - 11:30 a.m., at the Barrington Public Safety Building, 400 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington.  Mechanics from Marquardt of Barrington will conduct a 21-point inspection to check for basic safety and maintenance issues. The service is free, and no appointments are necessary; each inspection should last about 15 minutes. Participants will receive a written report that they can take to the mechanic who maintains their car.  Sponsors of the event are the …

Northbrook Two Crushed In Train Derailment A Glenview couple was crushed to death after a train hauling coal derailed and collapsed a bridge in Northbrook. Video shot by witnesses in the aftermath of the incident is attached to this story. The bodies of Glenview’s Burton Lindner, 69, and his wife Zorine, 70, were found Thursday beneath the wreckage of the 138-car freight train debris.  The couple was crushed when the viaduct they were driving under collapsed following the train derailment near Willow and Shermer Roads July 4. South Barrington Four Charged In 2011 Murder Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man found in Penny Road Forest Preserve last year.  David P. Campbell, 27, of Waukegan, was found naked and partially submerged in Penny Road Pond on July 7, 2011. Investigators say he was strangled and ruled his death a homicide.  Nadia Palacios, 22, of the 3500 block of Winhaven Drive, Waukegan, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Barrington Hills May 10 A Barrington Hills couple was found dead Thursday, May 10 in an apparent murder-suicide. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the couple as Julianne Damato, 47, and Joseph Damato, 56. Police were at their home at the end of Lakeview Lane early Thursday morning. When police searched the home, they found Jospeh Damato dead in the garage, and found Julianne Damato dead in the second floor master bedroom. Julianne Damato died of multiple gunshot wounds. Wheeling April 24 A school bus was sent careening into a Wheeling neighborhood April 24 after colliding with a Honda Civic near Dundee Road and Schoenbeck Road. No children were on the bus at the time. The bus was headed north on Schoenbeck Road at about 3:30 p.m. and had a greenlight, said Duane Madsen, a school crossing guard who saw the crash. Madsen said the Civic came through the intersection on Dundee Road. The bus hit the front of the Civic, went off the west side of Schoenbeck, plowed through a fence and line of shrubbery before striking the home of Don Johnson, a 24-year resident of Wheeling.
