District 220 Kindergarten Roundup Registration Information

The annual event will take place Feb. 20 at all Barrington School District elementary schools.

  On Feb. 20, the annual Kindergarten Roundup Registration events take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at all Barrington 220 elementary schools. This is the only evening parents can register incoming kindergarten students for the fall of 2013 at their home school. On any other day after Feb. 20, parents should visit the James Street Administrative Center to register their child for kindergarten. In addition to Feb. 20 kindergarten registration events at all Barrington 220 schools, families considering the Chinese Immersion or Spanish Dual Language programs for their incoming children are also invited to attend informational meetings. Parents interested in the Chinese Immersion program can attend a meeting at Countryside Elementary at 7 p.m. …

New Chinese Immersion Teacher Joins Rose School

Xia Du came to District 220 from Minnetonka, Minn.

Barbara Rose Elementary School welcomed a new Chinese Immersion teacher this school year. Xia Du came to Barrington 220 School District from Minnetonka, Minn. where she was involved in a similar program. She hails from Beijing and is excited to be a part of District 220. “I heard Barrington is a good school district,” Xia said. Barbara Rose principal Scott Carlson welcomed Xia in a new teacher orientation in early August. “We’re growing our program and we’ve added another rockstar teacher,” Carlson said. Xia got her Bachelor of Arts in Teaching at Capital Normal University in Beijing where she is from. She got her Masters of Arts in Teaching at Morgan State University and completed her student teaching in Portland. “For those of you who …

More wasteful spending. If the parents of the immersion students what their offspring to learn Chinese, they should hire a tutor or other program and pay for it. Why does the entire district have to fund a specialty program for the few?   more ›

Barrington School Board Debates Fall Chinese Delegation Trip

Six representatives from District 220 will travel to China for staff development and education as part of Chinese immersion program.

The Barrington 220 school board Tuesday debated the costs and justification for a 10-day Chinese delegation trip planned this fall.  The delegation is meant to enhance the district’s Chinese language program, and will include a mix of five administrators and teachers, and one school board member. The cost per person will be $900 and can be covered by staff development dollars already allocated in the budget. “It is typical that these types of things are paid through staff development, and for each teacher and administrator, that would be their one conference for the year,” Leonard said.
