So You Don't Celebrate Christmas Today, What's Your Plan Instead

Whether for religious reasons or because of work, not everyone is celebrating the holiday today.

For those who don't celebrate Christmas today (or any day) Dec. 25 can still be a nice day. Almost everyone has the day off, so maybe you take advantage of that to spend the day with family and friends. Downtowns, parks and streets are usually empty, so perhaps you hit a favorite ethnic restaurant that's open or go for a quiet run or long walk.  For those working, the day often means visits from family bearing the gift of a home-cooked meal and the promise of a Christmas celebration on another day. What's your non-Christmas Christmas Day tradition?

Barrington Police Assist in Busting Holiday Theft Ring

More than 100 people were arrested in a complex retail theft scheme that involved operations in various counties and neighboring states, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. Malls in Skokie, Niles and Schaumburg were among the few targeted.

A holiday sting operation led to the arrest of more than a 100 "grinches" following a month-long undercover investigation, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. According to authorities, thieves were targeting stores at Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, among others, and stealing mass amounts of designer clothing only to be sold at a reduced cost on the black market.  The investigation, dubbed "Operation Whoville," involved a series of separate covert undercover sting operations at six Chicago-area malls that included North Riverside, Orland Square, Woodfield, Gurnee Mills, Aurora Outlet Malls and Old Orchard, authorities said. Arrests were also made at stores on Michigan Avenue and State Street in …

Barrington High School Student Sells Christmas CDs for Newtown

Lydia Gabriel recorded a CD of traditional Christmas songs. All proceeds will go toward Sandy Hook School.

A Barrington High School student is going above and beyond to help the community of Newtown, Conn. heal from the tragic school shooting that happened last week. Lydia Gabriel, a freshman at BHS just knew she wanted to do something to help when she heard about the 27 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. “I always loved elementary school and when I heard about the people in Connecticut, I was just so upset and heartbroken,” she said.   Gabriel, a member of the Barrington High School choir, was singing Christmas songs when something clicked. “I said, maybe I could make a CD of traditional Christmas songs and give a CD to them, and donate money I raise to Connecticut,” she said. Where's Santa? Track Him Live from Barrington!

The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a website that now offers a Santa tracker mobile app to follow the jolly man's magical flight.

They sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, which has more than …

Grayslake Resident Collecting Ornaments for Area Hospitals

Bring a little Christmas cheer to those young and old who will be spending this holiday in the hospital by donating an ornament to HOPE Ornaments.

Living with a high blood pressure disease that has caused blackouts and seizures, Lyzzi Elliott, 28, of Grayslake, has spent several holidays in a place no one wants to be—a hospital. She's made it her mission to bring Christmas cheer to others in the same situation, by collecting holiday ornaments to donate to hospitals throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. Elliott said she was inspired to establish HOPE Ornaments seven years ago after bringing an ornament to her friend's daughter, who was hospitalized with leukemia. "The moment she saw the ornament she smiled, and it changed everything," said Elliott, who understands what it's like to be stuck in a hospital bed for the holidays instead of celebrating at home with family and friends. Elliott…

These sound like fun! My wife and I are always looking for fun things with the kids, especially around Christmastime. There is also a great Christmas Light Display in the Barrington area. The show is computer controlled and synchronized to several Christmas songs, which you can listen to in your car. The highlights of the show are a 20-foot mega-tree with over 10,000 lights and leaping arches …   more ›
