Harper College Debate Team Takes Third at State

The team now heads to the national competition in Los Angeles.

  The Harper College debate team is gearing up for the national competition in Los Angeles next week. Four members of the team won first place in various categories at the recent state competition. The team took third place overall, Harper College reports. First place finishers include:  Coach Jeff Przybylo has helped Harper’s debate teams win top-10 rankings nationally for the last 11 years, the Daily Herald reports.

Harper College Tuition Rates to Increase

The cost for one credit hour will go up by $2 beginning in the summer 2013 semester.

  Harper College students will soon be paying more per credit hour. The college’s board of trustees approved increasing tuition by $2 per credit hour beginning in the summer 2013 semester, the Daily Herald reports. Tuition will increase from $106.50 to $108.50 per credit hour for in-district residents. Full-time students taking 12 credit hours per semester will now pay $1,302. Harper College, Governors State Join Forces with New Dual Degree Program

Palatine Harper College students now have another clear path to a four-year degree. The college has joined with Governors State University to create a program that guarantees admission to students who complete their associate degree.

Meet Harper College Ethics Bowl Team

The four-member Harper College team members are from Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights and South Barrington. They beat out teams from four-year universities for a spot at the national ethics bowl competition in February 2013.

Four Harper College students this winter will debate ethical issues, from plagiarism and paid maternity leave to the legalization of drugs in Guatemala, at an event that combines the art of philosophy with the intensity of a national collegiate competition. The Ethics Bowl team landed the opportunity to compete by grabbing its first-ever national championship qualifying bid at a December 1 regional contest. Harper’s squad beat out competitors from nearly a dozen Midwestern four-year colleges and universities, including the University of Michigan and the Illinois Institute of Technology, to earn the prestigious slot. Barrington Hills Woman Named Distinguished Alumni at Harper College

Angela Manhart Guyette Lemay will receive her award on Oct. 29.

  Barrington Hills resident Angela Manhart Guyette Lemay has just been announced as one of six Distinguished Alumni this year at Harper College. Lemay is the chief financial officer at Refurbished Office Environments, a Chicago company focused on sustainable alternatives to the manufacturing of office furniture.  After attending Harper and later earning a bachelor’s in business administration, she earned an MBA from North Park University. She actively supports a number of organizations, including WINGS and McHenry County PADS, and sits on the Board of Directors for The Buddy Foundation and the Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble. Harper College Attempts Local Solution to Address National Problem

Harper College partners with manufacturers to help solve shortage of skilled workers.

The economy will be one of the main issues during the campaigning leading up to November’s elections. With the U.S. unemployment rate at 8.2 percent nationally as of May 2012 and Illinois’ unemployment rate at 8.6 percent, many believe there are no jobs available. However, manufactures in Chicago’s northwest suburbs have jobs ready to be filled but say there is a shortage of skilled workers. As a result, many factories are filled with machines but no one to operate them. The expo takes place April 28.

CBS2 Chicago Weatherman Steve Baskerville will highlight Harper College’s second annual College and Career Expo which gives elementary and middle school children a taste of what going to college is like.  Baskerville’s appearance is part of dozens of demonstrations and hands-on activities showcasing careers in science, health care, graphic arts, manufacturing, astronomy, world languages and more. Students in fourth through eighth grades are welcome to explore their future and learn about 21st century careers.

Harper College is inviting all students in the fourth through eighth grades, as well as their parents and families, to a free College and Career Expo on Saturday, April 28. The Expo will be held from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Avanté Center for Science, Health Careers, and Emerging Technologies on the Harper College campus, located at 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine. Harper College Observatory Opening

Through September, the college will host free up-close viewings of the evening and night skies at the Karl G. Henize Observatory.

When the planet of Venus passes in front of the sun this summer – a rare event that won’t happen again for more than a century – Harper College will offer a front-row seat to local residents. Through September, the College will host free up-close viewings of the evening and night skies at the Karl G. Henize Observatory on the main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. The roughly every-other-Saturday viewings will start April 14, allowing visitors to stargaze through Harper’s large main observatory dome or other telescopes set up on the lawn nearby. Man Videotaped Woman In Harper Bathroom

Christopher Byers, 21, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized videotaping, the Daily Herald reported.

A Harper College student who was arrested in October for videotaping a woman while she was in a bathroom stall has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unathorized videotaping, the Daily Herald reported. Christopher Byers, 21, of Elk Grove Village originally faced a felony charge related to the incident. The woman was in a bathroom stall at 10:50 a.m. and Byers was in the adjoining stall. The woman noticed that Byers was using a phone to video her and ran out of the bathroom, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office. The Daily Herald reported that Byers was sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to have no contact with the victim or Harper College.
