Barrington Board Approves Hough/Main Development Project

Two buildings consisting of office and retail space will be built on the corner by Evanston-based developer Arthur Hill & Co.

  The Barrington Village Board approved a recommendation from the Plan Commission for a mixed-used retail and office development to be built at Hough and Main Streets. The vote didn’t come without several controversial opinions from the public. Many addressed the board to say Barrington is oversaturated with vacant office space, and the project would do better with residential units instead. The board heard from many existing building owners who expressed their fears that the Evanston based Arthur Hill & Co. developer will poach tenants away from them. Some say since the developer didn’t have to pay for his land, only the buildings, he will be able to slash rent costs for tenants, offering a more desirable space. Village President Karen …

Developer, Village present Hough/Main Project to Planning Commission

Residents voice concerns on traffic, parking and office space glut.

Some fifty residents and business owners gathered at Barrington Village Hall on Tuesday, December 4 to hear details on the Hough and Main street development plan.  Bruce Reid, representing Evanston-based developer Arthur Hill and Co. and Mark Hopkins from HKM Architechs of Arlington Heights, clicked through slides in an hour-long presentation.  The plan calls for a two-building, retail and office space development called Barrington Village Center be built on the 2.7 acres of land owned by the Village.  The buildings will be comprised of approximately 25,000 square feet of retail and up to 30,000 square feet of second and possibly third story office space.  Plans for both a two-story and three-story main building were presented. What a shame to do THIS to Hough & Main. I sort of like having convenient parking like we have now. Just thinking the other day how nice if other towns like Cary would have the same. Drive by this sign every day and crinkle my nose at it.   more ›
