Man Loses Job and Wins Lottery on the Same Day

Wladyslaw Krawiec of Cary said he "prayed for a little bit of help."

Lady Luck has touched Cary once again. Cary resident Wladyslaw Krawiec showed up for work as usual just six days before Christmas, but was told to go back home. "My boss said there was no more work for us so I picked up my tools, left the job site and drove home," Krawiec said in a press release. On his way home, he said a little prayer asking for "a little bit of help" and stopped at a gas station to check his Lucky Day Lotto ticket from the previous night's drawing. His prayer was answered quickly as he discovered he'd won $175,000. Krawiec matched all five winning numbers of the Dec. 18 drawing, according to an Illinois Lottery press release. Residents Warned of Lottery Scam

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said two Chicagoland victims lost up to $90,000.

Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning residents not to be fooled by scams where “winners” are told they are entitled to a large lottery cash prize without ever having purchased a ticket.  Scammers are reaching their victims, who are often senior citizens, via telephone calls, faxes, emails and letters to tell them about their “jackpot.” Some of these letters include phony seals and certificates. To collect, however, money needs to be sent either via Western Union or cashier’s check to a foreign address to pay for additional taxes and/or handling charges.  The scammer may also contact the victim again and mention there was a mistake on the tax calculation and more money must be sent.  During the last six months, an 80-year-old …

Powerball Hits $500 Million Jackpot

Wednesday’s jackpot could go up higher, lottery officials said.

Jozefa S. is an Illinois State Lottery winner with a bit of advice on playing the lottery: “you can’t win if you don’t play so go ahead and play.” A lot of people will be plucking down $2 for a Powerball ticket in one of the lottery’s biggest jackpots of the year. The jackpot is now $500 million and may grow larger by Wednesday’s drawing, lottery officials said. “When (the jackpot) is this large, it’s not unusual for the jackpot to go up.
