New Year’s Eve is a big night for drunk driving enforcement and arrests.
The slogan “Don’t Drink and Drive” can become trite until you consider the numbers. Numbers like the 258 lives lost in drunk driving crashes in 2012. It is one of the statistics that local and state police hope makes you think twice about drinking and driving this holiday weekend. Police throughout the area, including sheriff’s deputies in Lake, Cook and McHenry County, will be doing special drunk driving enforcements for New Year’s Eve. Illinois State police will be conducting roadside safety checks and special alcohol enforcement on highways and tollways. The patrols will focus on four areas that often cause fatal crashes: speeding, DUI, seat belt compliance and distracted driving, according to a release. “Alcohol or drug impairment is…
Choosing the appropriate sparkling wine for New Year's Eve can make you dizzy before the first sip. Here's a handy guide to the intoxicating world of bubbles on a budget.
The pop of the Champagne cork is as much a part of the New Year’s Eve soundtrack as "Auld Lang Syne" and fireworks. The tiny, tickling bubbles evoke celebratory moods. With so many sparkling wines to choose from, picking the best bottle can be daunting. Prices for sparkling wine range from less than $10 to more than $500 per bottle. Keep in mind that while you usually get what you pay for, there are some great options for those of us on a budget. Large “negociant” champagne houses that purchase much of their fruit, such as Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger, Perrier Jouet and Nicolas Feuillatte, dominate the market. However, in the last decade or so, Champagne from small growers has gained some traction with Champagne …

The American Academy of Ophthalmology offer some advice for a safe New Year's celebration.
The following public service announcement was provided by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A champagne toast is a great way to welcome 2013, but be mindful as you uncork the bottle: warm bottles of champagne and improper cork-removal techniques cause serious, potentially blinding eye injuries every year. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that champagne bottles contain pressure as high as 90 pounds per square inch – more than the pressure found inside a typical car tire. This pressure can launch a champagne cork at 50 miles per hour as it leaves the bottle — fast enough to shatter glass. It's also fast enough to permanently damage vision. Champagne cork mishaps can lead to various, serious eye injuries, such as rupture of …

Champagne is the drink of choice to ring in 2011.
Break out the bubbly! New Year’s Eve is the night that champagne takes center stage. Although there are many sparkling wines made all over the world, to be called Champagne, the wine must be produced in the Champagne region of France. Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest recorded sparkling wine, was invented in 1531 by Benedictine Monks in the Abbey of Saint Hilaire in France, debunking the myth that Dom Perignon invented sparking wine. According to Steve Berry, Owner of the Park Avenue Wine Bar, one of the latest trends in champagne is grower-produced Champagnes. “Instead of selling all of their grapes to other champagne makers, growers are directly producing Champagne from the grapes they grow. Joël Falmel and Nicholas Feuillatte are …
