Harper Nursing Students Race the Clock in Simulation Hospital

Realistic setting gives Health Careers students a safe place to practice their skills

In a narrow, darkened hallway, Barb Gawron moans into a microphone. On the other side of the wall, in a room Gawron observes through a one-way mirror, her moan emanates from a mannequin lying in a hospital bed. To the Harper College nursing student who has just entered the room, the mannequin is a patient named William Green.  "What's wrong, Mr. Green?" the student asks. "I can't breathe," is the reply, which trails into another moan. The student doesn't know it yet, but she has less than five minutes to save Mr. Green's life. As Harper's lab and simulation coordinator, Gawron has overseen the hospital since it opened in February.
