Rihanna Says She's Impressed with BHS Students Reaching Out

Wait for pop star too long for some, others say it was worth it.

A gym packed with teens and some adults waited more than three hours for Rihanna to come to the school, Friday, as part of a nationwide video contest. Scheduled for 2 p.m., Rihanna arrived after 5:30 p.m. She thanked the students for waiting for her. "That means a lot to me," she said. Prior to arriving, Principal Steve McWilliams said Rihanna was apologetic for running late.  "I wanted to come because I was so impressed and very touched by your video. I wanted to express that in person," Rihanna said. She said she was most impressed that the students aren't just raising money for their own efforts, but are reaching out to people outside the school. Rihanna told the teens to enjoy their spring break and then posed for photos with students…

Barrington 220 students were amazing as they waited patiently. No one wanted to be there waiting hours and hours, but the students were awesome. I am a staff member who volunteered to be there, it was a long wait for sure, but the quality of our staff and students makes 220 a great place to be!   more ›

BHS-TV Students Win Contest, Visit from Rihanna

Members of the television production class created a video showcasing volunteer efforts at BHS that won a nation-wide contest.

  Barrington High School students shine bright like a diamond, and it shows. Members of BHS-TV created an inspiring video highlighting the volunteer and philanthropic efforts of BHS students that won a nation-wide contest sponsored by pop-star Rihanna. The school beat out 52 other entries. The grand prize: A visit from the singer herself. “We saw the contest and thought it was a really good idea, especially because Barrington is so philanthropic,” Peter Chung, a BHS-TV member said. “It took about a month to put it together, but it was probably dozens of hours…it was a very tedious process.” The video showcasing the thousands of dollars students have raised for charity, and hundreds of hours they’ve volunteered, has 4,163 hits on YouTube. …

Good job to the students that were involved with this project. What a shame that Rhianna and her Management Team were so disrespectful to these excited young people. Rhianna would not be my choice for a role model however I do understand that young people have a different view.
