Barrington Police Assist in Busting Holiday Theft Ring

More than 100 people were arrested in a complex retail theft scheme that involved operations in various counties and neighboring states, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. Malls in Skokie, Niles and Schaumburg were among the few targeted.

A holiday sting operation led to the arrest of more than a 100 "grinches" following a month-long undercover investigation, the Cook County State's Attorney announced today. According to authorities, thieves were targeting stores at Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, among others, and stealing mass amounts of designer clothing only to be sold at a reduced cost on the black market.  The investigation, dubbed "Operation Whoville," involved a series of separate covert undercover sting operations at six Chicago-area malls that included North Riverside, Orland Square, Woodfield, Gurnee Mills, Aurora Outlet Malls and Old Orchard, authorities said. While most major retailers that have an online presence aren’t tipping their hats on their online deals just yet, many have splash pages set up that they're inviting shoppers to bookmark in advance of the Nov. 26 shopping holiday. Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Barrington. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. Is Black Friday Taking Over Thanksgiving Thursday?

More retailers are choosing to open their doors on Thanksgiving night to eager bargain hunters. Meanwhile, an employee of Target is taking a stand, and has gotten more than 338,000 signatures from others that agree-Thanksgiving needs to be saved.

Has Black Friday been stretched too far, or near, now that deals are actually being offered starting Thanksgiving night? The answer to that question is yes, from one Target employee out of Corona, California. “C Renee” has obtained 338, 418 signatures on Change.org from people who agree Target needs to take the high road and ‘save Thanksgiving.’ "Since workers need to show up sometimes hours before the story officially opens, this will take much of Thanksgiving away from retail employees across the country," C Renee said in her petition on Change.org. Target can take the high road and save Thanksgiving for employees like me and our families by saying no to "Thanksgiving Creep," C Renee added.  Target’s Black Friday deals start at 9 p.m. …

New Women's Boutique to Open in The Foundry

Dish, owned by Megan Disharoon, will open in mid-October.

A new upscale boutique with a focus on personal shopping is coming to The Foundry shopping center on the corner of Hart Road and Northwest Highway.   “Dish” will be opening its doors in the former location of Satin Filly in the coming weeks. Owner Megan Disharoon of Wauconda says she hopes to offer Barrington area shoppers something not easily found in this area. “The concept is that my mom could take me shopping and we could both find a great outfit and a pair of shoes and jewelry to match,” she said. “It’s style for all ages.” Disharoon, a mother of three, decided to act on her dream of owning a boutique by taking the plunge and creating “Dish.” “It took a while to nail down the concept, but we finally just did it,” she said. Dish will …

Heinen's Fine Foods Pleases New Customers

The new grocery store opened on Aug. 22.

To say there was much anticipation for the grand opening of Heinen’s Fine Foods on Aug. 22 would be an understatement. Crowds packed the parking lot of The Shops at Flint Creek to see what all the excitement was about, and most of them did not walk away disappointed. The morning started off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the store’s entrance. Village President Karen Darch said a few words about how glad the village is to have this new store in town before Tom and Jeff Heinen took over. They cut the ribbon in typical Heinen’s fashion: using a butcher block and a knife; a tradition started by their grandfather who was a butcher. After the ribbon cutting, dozens of people made their way through the store’s front doors to see what the …

Heinen's Fine Foods Opens for Business

The new Barrington grocery store opens this morning in the Shops at Flint Creek.

Barrington area residents now have a new place to shop for groceries. Heinen's Fine Foods will open its doors to the public this morning at 10 a.m. The family-owned grocery store chose Barrington as its first store outside of Ohio in an announcement late last year. After months of building and planning, the store is finally ready for the public after much community anticipation.  Peggy Blanchard, Barrington’s Director of Economic and Community Development, visited a Heinen's store in 2007 and thought it would do well in the Barrington community. Twin brothers and Heinen's Fine Foods owners Tom and Jeff Heinen thought Barrington would be a good fit.  “We looked for quite a while for our first out of state venture,” Tom Heinen said. “We …
