Tonight's commute could be problematic for many as Winter Storm Draco bears down on the area. The Chicago Tribune reports the heaviest snow will fall between 3 and 9 p.m. Thursday with wind gusts reaching as high as 50 to 60 mph. Our area could see between 3 and 7 inches of with one to two inches expected to fall per hour at the height of the storm, according to the National Weather Service. "The combination of the heavy snowfall rates and very strong winds will result in greatly reduced visibilities and possible blizzard conditions," according to the NWS. Barrington Public Works director anticipates snow to be cleaned up by Saturday morning.
1:18 p.m. Barrington 220 has cancelled all middle school and elementary afterschool events due to the weather. The status of high school activities can be checked by calling the Activities and Athletics Hotline at 847-842-3292. 12:36 p.m. All Barrington 220 School District after-school events and activities have been cancelled due to today's storm, as announced on the district's Facebook page. 10:13 a.m. Barrington Public Works Director Dennis Burmeister said snow crews will have a long day today, with the first shift working from 7 a.m. to midnight. Gusting winds expected to exacerbate conditions during snowstorm, making travel nearly impossible.
A winter blizzard is heading this way and it could compare to the worse storms in recent history, including those in January 1967 and January 1999. “We’re going to be measuring total snowfall in feet,” said Ed Fenelon, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, Chicago office. The worse conditions are expected from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m., Wednesday, he said. “Snowfall will be heavy and at times visibility will be less than 100 feet. We’re expecting 2 to 3 inches per hour at the height of the storm. That rate is tremendous,” Fenelon said.
