Patch Flash: ‘Toughest Sheriff’ at GOP Picnic; Drew Peterson Case Heads to Supreme Court

  Sheriff Joe Arpaio,, the self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff in America,” has his critics. But you’d have been hard-pressed to find any inside the Kendall County Republicans’ annual picnic Saturday in Yorkville, according to the Oswego Patch. As the featured speaker at this year’s event, Arpaio drew two standing ovations from the 600-strong crowd at the Kendall County Fairgounds. About 70 protesters gathered outside the fairgrounds. Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona since 1992, is famous for his “tent city” jail in Phoenix, his firm stance against illegal immigration, and his willingness to enforce those immigration laws. Harper Drowning Death Ruled An Accident

Victoria Auer, 64, drowned in March after her car plunged into a pond on Harper College's campus.

The death of a woman whose car plunged into a pond at Harper College in March has been ruled an accident. Victoria Auer, 64, of Rolling Meadows, drowned March 24 when her car left the interior drive at Harper College and plunged into a pond. The Daily Herald reported that the Cook County Medical Examiner listed Auer's blood-alcohol level at .173–more than twice the level of legal intoxication. Harper College Communications Chief Phil Burdick said an investigation by campus police found nothing wrong with the vehicle Auer was driving. "There were no mechanical problems with car," Burdick said. He said that investigators also found no skidmarks at the accident scene. Accident? An old lady gets drunk and drives into a pond on a "closed" campus, leaving no skid marks and it's ruled an accident??? Talk about seeing the world thru rose-colored glasses. Of course, it's always possible that there is info that I'm not privy to -- but I wonder, don't the police know how often people intentionally drive into lakes and ponds? Or, at least contemplate doing so.   more ›
