On the article Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

ReplyStatistic: "Out of the over 32,000 U.S. traffic fatalities in 2011 (the most recent year for data), less than one percent were caused by drivers between 0.05 and 0.08 percent BAC." And that does not say that BAC was a determining factor in the accident (more likely texting or talking on the phone). Found a BAC calculator online and found that a 100lb. woman, would not be able to go out, nurse a martini for an hour, and still drive home (.07). We all want to eliminate drunk driving, but this sounds absurd.

On the article Braiman Calls Downtown Buffalo Grove 'an Incredible Opportunity'

Peter: Note that I did not criticize Braiman personally, nor say that he was up for election. But also note that he is not just a board member, but the board President. As such, when he speaks, he is, or should be representing the board as a whole. Less than a month ago, all the board members, up for election or not (but especially those up for election) maintained that this project was still just in the feasibility and exploration stages. Now, less than a month later, the project is on a public sales tour, with the Village President "cheerleading" and calling it an "Incredible Opportunity", and giving personal character recommendations for Chuck Malk. I would feel pretty naïve if I did not see that as an end run.

ReplyPolitics at its best. Before the election, no one on the board had a stand on the issue, in the face of strong opposition and interested parties (voters). After the election, it is "Incredible Opportunity". This is how politicians manage to NOT represent the voters, and instead represent "special interests".

On the article Buffalo Grove Officials Debate Home Fire Sprinklers

Village money does not come out of a well. If they give property tax discounts, that just means that the rest of the tax payers are paying for them. They won't save the village any money, since they operate after the fact (after the fire starts). It is not like they are going to reduce the number of fire calls, just the intensity.

Jose, You can still drive 65 in the right lane if you want, just please don't do it in the left lane. 70 is more than safe in today's vehicles.

On the article Should 17-Year-Olds be Allowed to Vote?

It changed from 21 to 18 in 1971 via the 26th amendment. During the Viet Nam war, the issue was big because young people were drafted into the army at age 18, but did not have the right to vote for or against those sending them to war.

There is something to what he says. Since primarys determine who goes to the final election, and that is usually decided on party lines, then 17 year olds will help decide who goes there. If you want them to vote at 17 1/2, then do it, but don't cover it up with convoluted logic. A 17 year old can be as young as a Junior in HS, never more than a senior. Voting? Really? Typical Sente. A 17 year old has just gotten out of curfew in Buffalo Grove. A 17 year old cannot get married in Illinois without a parent's signature. But we are going to let them choose our legislators?
